The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revoked the membership of media personality and parliamentary hopeful Umar Sanda Amadu after he declared his intention to contest the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.

In a formal letter signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC said Sanda’s decision breaches the party’s constitution and undermines its collective choice to field an officially elected candidate for the March 3, 2026, polls.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken note of your decision to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election scheduled for 3rd March 2026.

“This action is in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution and the collective decision of the Party to field a duly and democratically elected candidate,” the statement said.

According to the party, Sanda’s decision to run against its endorsed candidate automatically terminates his membership.

“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter added.

The NDC further cautioned the former member against linking his campaign to the party’s identity in any form.

“You are hereby formally notified that you are prohibited from using the Party’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property or paraphernalia associated with the Party in the course of your campaign or any related political activity.”

The development heightens tensions in the constituency ahead of the by-election, which political observers say is expected to draw significant national attention due to its competitive nature.

Umar Sanda Amadu, who previously worked within the party’s communications structure, had not publicly responded to the NDC’s decision at the time of filing this report.
