The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has officially launched its 65th Anniversary to celebrate “a Legacy of Excellence and a New Frontier in Francophone Africa.”
The landmark event, held at the GB Auditorium, GIMPA campus, on Wednesday, 26 March 2026, marks 65 years of GIMPA’s standing as a leading Pan-African university and a global center of excellence in leadership, governance, and management education.
A Legacy of Shaping Leaders
Founded in 1961 through a strategic partnership between the United Nations and the Government of Ghana, GIMPA began its journey as the Institute of Public Administration (IPA).
Its foundational mission was to train the first generation of civil servants for the newly independent nation. Over the decades, the Institute has undergone a profound evolution:
1969 – The Evolution: The institution officially became the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, broadening its mandate to empower leadership across both the public and private sectors
2004 – The Autonomy: Empowered by the GIMPA Act, the Institute gained full financial and operational autonomy, earning the right to award its own prestigious degrees
2010 to Today – The Expansion: GIMPA grew into a powerhouse of diverse disciplines, expanding its footprint from Governance and Law to Technology, Social Sciences, business, and is currently underway in the Creative Arts
Training the Architects of Policy and Governance
Central to GIMPA’s 65-year legacy is its role in training the “great people” who have steered the course of Ghana and the African continent.
The current first lady, Lordina Mahama; the speaker of parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin; the current Chief Justice, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie; and the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
These alumni represent a vast community of influencers who continue to “rebuild connections and grow stronger together” under the GIMPA banner.
Strategic Expansion: Francophone Africa and Digital Transformation
As GIMPA looks toward the future, it is not merely reflecting on achievements but is stepping boldly into a new era of continental leadership. A key highlight of the 2026 milestone is GIMPA’s strategic expansion across Francophone Africa.
This initiative aims to offer world-class leadership training to French-speaking African nations, further solidifying GIMPA’s mission as a truly Pan-African institution.
This expansion is coupled with a commitment to digital transformation, which serves as a cornerstone for the Institute’s vision for 2026 and beyond.
The theme for the anniversary, “A legacy of excellence, a future of digital transformation,” underscores this dual focus on honoring historical roots while embracing the technological advancements of the modern era.
.Anniversary Celebrations and Global Engagement
The launch event at the GIMPA campus in Greenhill, Accra, will kick off a year-long program. The anniversary launch, themed around “65 years of leadership, governance, and excellence,” will bring together current and former leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, and international partner institutions
“As we celebrate our 65th Anniversary, we aren’t just looking back,” the Rector Prof. Samuel Kwaku Bonsu notes. “We are stepping boldly into a future defined by digital transformation and expansion across Francophone Africa,” leaving behind a sustainable footprint.
GIMPA has currently gone paperless with all of its internal communication. GIMPA invites all stakeholders, media partners, and the general public to join in this celebration of sixty-five years of leadership and excellence.
