The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, has directed all students who obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 at the end of the 2024/2025 academic year to withdraw from the university.

The decision, contained in a letter signed by Mrs Lydia Anowa Nyarko-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs, and dated October 2, 2025, with reference number AA.0IE/10-25, is in accordance with Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017) on passing and withdrawal.

According to the regulation, a student qualifies for progression only if they obtain a CGPA of 1.00 or better in all examinations and meet the departmental requirements for entry into courses at the next level. It further stipulates that there shall be no probation for students who fail to meet this benchmark.

“The Registrar shall ask a candidate who does not qualify to progress to the next level to withdraw from the University,” the regulation states.

Consequently, students who fail to achieve the minimum CGPA requirement are deemed not to be in good academic standing and must immediately withdraw from their programmes.

The directive also instructs affected students to send an email using their official student email addresses by November 30, 2025, to formally confirm their withdrawal from the University.

For certain programmes, withdrawal letters will be sent to affected students directly by their respective schools or departments.

The latest action forms part of the University’s effort to uphold academic standards and ensure that only students who meet the required performance thresholds progress through their studies

The University of Ghana, the premier university in Ghana, was founded as the University College of the Gold Coast by Ordinance on August 11, 1948, for the purpose of providing and promoting university education, learning and research.

University of Ghana is administered through a collegiate system comprising the following colleges, as well as a central administration that includes a School of Graduate Studies and an Office of International Programmes:

  • College of Basic and Applied Sciences
  • College of Education
  • College of Health Sciences
  • College of Humanities
