A committee supervising the vetting of aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries in the Ashanti Region has vehemently rejected claims that it received a petition filed by the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) K.T Hammond and 14 other NPP executives.

The document widely published online sought the disqualification of an aspirant in the parliamentary primary, Sammy Binfoh Darkwa.

The petitioners accused Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, a Deputy Managing Director at the Ghana Publishing Company, of not being a card-bearing member of the NPP and contributing less to the constituency’s progress.

He is also accused of taking away pick-ups donated to the constituency after losing the 2018 parliamentary primaries to the incumbent MP, K.T Hammond. The petition states that Mr Binfoh does not qualify to contest the Adansi Asokwa seat on the ticket of the NPP, as enshrined in Article 12(4) and (7) of the Party’s Constitution.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting the petition had been submitted, the committee, led by the National Organizer Nana Boakye emphasized the importance of transparency in the party’s internal processes and clarified that they had not been approached with any formal complaint against Sammy Binfoh Darkwa.

“We have not received any petition from Hon K.T. Hammond”, Nana Boakye told journalists during a briefing after the first vetting day held at the Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s campaign office.

Asked whether all aspirants have been cleared yet Nana B as he is affectionately called said, “we are not done yet, tomorrow is the second day other aspirants will be vetted and then the final report will be submitted to the National Executive Committee (NEC) through the General Secretary.

“We have also conducted the balloting for them, but it came with a directive that they cannot campaign with it…So I can say the process has been smooth and I commend the regional team for a good job.

The vetting committee in the Ashanti Region is a four-zonal group working in two separate locations including the regional party office.

The parliamentary primaries, which is the last internal election of the governing party is slated for 27 January 2024.
