The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being the main drivers and beneficiaries of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, across the country.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, November 5, 2025, Mr. Kodua stated emphatically that the “real galamseyers and enablers of illegal mining are in the NDC,” alleging that several members of the NDC, from national executives to constituency officers and Members of Parliament, are neck-deep in the destruction of the nation’s natural resources.
“The jury is out there, and it is very clear to the people of Ghana that the real galamseyers and enablers of galamsey are in the NDC. From their Members of Parliament to their executives at all levels, they have taken over almost all the galamsey sites in the country and are mining irresponsibly and with impunity,” Mr. Kodua asserted.
According to him, some NDC members have become so emboldened that they now attack military personnel on duty when attempts are made to halt their illegal operations. He described such acts as a dangerous reflection of the impunity being encouraged under the current Mahama-led administration.
“They even have the courage and effrontery to attack military officers in uniform for daring to stop them. That is the state we are in regarding the galamsey fight,” he lamented.
The NPP General Secretary expressed grave concern over the environmental consequences of such activities, noting that turbidity levels in several rivers have reached alarming levels, forcing some water treatment plants to shut down. He stated that the NDC’s actions have exacerbated the illegal mining crisis and threaten the sustainability of Ghana’s water resources and agricultural productivity.
Mr. Kodua, however, emphasized that despite the politicization of the galamsey fight by the NDC during its time in opposition, the NPP remains committed to working with the government and all relevant stakeholders to address the menace once and for all.
We in the NPP duly acknowledge the existential threat posed by galamsey and are ready to cooperate with the government to tackle it. We will not behave like the NDC when they were in opposition, trying to make it appear as though galamsey was an Akufo-Addo creation. The NPP is a responsible opposition, and we are prepared to confront this generational crisis for the love of country,” he stated.
Mr. Kodua further urged all political actors to approach the fight against galamsey with sincerity and patriotism, rather than partisanship. He stressed that illegal mining is not just an environmental issue but a national security threat that requires unity and courage to overcome.
