Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially announced his intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship position in 2026.

He made his intentions known in a press release issued by his office and dated November 8, 2025. Mr. Boadu recounted the state of the NPP and all the challenges confronting the party, noting that he decided to contest for the top job in the party to help address these challenges.

“We have lost our media relationship, our youth support base, and the confidence of many within the business community. We have drifted away from the middle-class, tertiary students, Academicians, Chiefs, the clergy, trade unions, celebrities, opinion leaders, and groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag.

“Our parliamentary strength has weakened, our strength that stood at 122 in 2012, 169 in 2016, 137+1 in 2020, has now declined to 87 seats, representing 31.5%, and this calls for great concern,” Mr Boadu’s press release read in part.

“After broad consultations with founding fathers, Council of Elders, Party executives, Patrons, Nasara, Women’s wing, Youth wing, Foot soldiers, and Opinion leaders; upon sober reflections, and prayerful consideration of where our Party stands today and where it must go, I, John Boadu, wish to officially declare my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in 2026 when the nomination for National leadership is opened,” the statement further read.

Tried-and-tested

“The Party is the very vehicle that carries us to our desired destination of victory. But if that vehicle is weak and lacks an experienced driver to steer it, even the strongest driver (flagbearer) cannot reach the destination. Power is won when the Party is strong and guided by tried-and-tested leadership in Party management.

“At every turning point in a political party’s journey, a special kind of leader is required; one who has been tried, tested and proven through years of service and sacrifice. Proven experience matters in every rescue mission. God entrusts His rescue missions to those whose experiences have been tested and proven.

“Moses had to spend 40 years in Egypt to learn, grow and gain the experience needed to lead his people (Israelites) to freedom. And like David and Joshua, whose courage and experience brought victory to their people, I have the ability and proven capacity to lead our great party to win. NPP needs to be rescued!

“I am the longest-serving party officer, with over 30 years of dedicated service to our great Party. I have worked at all levels—Polling Station Chairman (1996-1998), Constituency Secretary (1998), Greater Accra Regional Research officer (2002-2003), Director of Finance (2002-2005) National Youth Treasurer (2003-2005), National Youth Organiser (2005-2010), National Deputy Communication Director (2010-2014), National Organiser (2014-2018), Ag. General Secretary (2015-2018) and General Secretary (2018-2022).

“I am one of the longest-serving members of the NEC and the National Council in the history of our Party. These experiences are not just years counted – they are years of sacrifice, learning, and winning. This moment in our Party’s history is not a time for experiments,” John Boadu pointed out in his statement.

Record of service

“When it comes to winning elections and empowering party structures, the record speaks for itself.

“With the unwavering support of my able team, we achieved unprecedented milestones in the political history of our great Party, the NPP.

“The highest number of votes ever achieved in Ghana’s political history, 6.7 million votes in 2020, was completed under my watch as General Secretary and Director of Operations.

“The two highest numbers of votes ever achieved in NPP’s history are 2016, 5.7million votes, and 2020, 6.7million votes. John Boadu achieved these as the Director of Operations and General Secretary

“The two highest numbers of parliamentary seats ever won by the NPP since 1992 were in 2016, 169 seats, and 137 seats in 2020 under my tenure.
