The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially flagbearer hopefuls and their supporters, to demonstrate restraint, discipline and maturity as the party heads into its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

In a Christmas message released on Thursday, December 25, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the aftermath of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections should be a period of sober reflection and responsible conduct, rather than internal conflict.

He emphasised that the manner in which the NPP manages its internal contest will play a critical role in its recovery and future electoral fortunes. Drawing lessons from the 2024 loss, he pointed to unity as the cornerstone for rebuilding the party’s strength, credibility, and appeal to the Ghanaian electorate.

According to him, electoral success can only be achieved when members are prepared to place the collective interest of the party above personal ambition.

The Minority Leader warned that the flagbearer race must not be allowed to erode the party’s core values, traditions and moral authority, cautioning that indiscipline, disrespect, and personal attacks could further weaken the NPP at a time when unity is most needed.

He therefore called for decorum in all campaign activities and urged aspirants to carefully consider their conduct and public statements.

“Let us treat one another and our cherished traditions as sacred. What our forebears taught through their sweat and blood, I dare say, no party member must undermine,” he said.

“Let us not act in any way that will destroy the unity, credibility, and moral authority of our party. Rather, let us build carefully and faithfully on the strong foundations laid by our leaders.”
