The Dombo family has dissociated itself from a banner headline published by The Chronicle Newspaper on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, which claimed that the family was backing the New Patriotic Party flagbearer aspirant and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, ahead of the NPP presidential primaries.

In a statement issued and signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the family described the headline, “DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN,” as misleading and inconsistent with its publicly stated position.

“The Dombo family has taken note of a banner headline published by The Chronicle Newspaper on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, which read, ‘DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN.’ We consider it necessary and responsible to set the record straight and correct the misleading impression created by that publication,” the statement said.

The family categorically denied endorsing Dr Acheampong ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership contest scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

“At no time has the Dombo family endorsed or supported the New Patriotic Party flagbearer aspirant and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, in relation to the party’s flagbearership contest,” the statement stressed. It added that “the headline as published is inaccurate and does not reflect our publicly stated position, convictions, or values.”

Stance

The Dombo family stated that its position has been “clear, consistent, and grounded firmly in principle,” noting that its public interventions have always been guided by “vision, character, and conviction in leadership.”

According to the statement, the family has openly expressed support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom it described as a leader of merit and intellectual depth.

“We have openly and deliberately expressed support for H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, based on merit, intellectual depth, resilience, and a demonstrated commitment to the long-term development of Ghana,” the family stated.

The family further cautioned against any attempt to misrepresent its position, stating that “any attempt to reinterpret this principled position to suggest support for another individual is a distortion of fact and a misrepresentation of our views.”

Historical role

Touching on its role in Ghana’s political tradition, the Dombo family underscored values of integrity, inclusion, service, and sacrifice, describing them as non-negotiable. “Our name and legacy are not tools for speculation, nor instruments for political convenience,” the statement noted.

Explaining the basis of its support for Dr Bawumia, the family emphasised that it was neither personal nor transactional. “Our support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has never been driven by personal relationships, material inducements, or sectional considerations,” the statement said.

It also described the stance as “a reasoned and deliberate” choice rooted in leadership that prioritizes “ideas over noise and substance over spectacle.”

The statement also praised Dr Bawumia’s leadership qualities, citing his “clarity of thought and policy depth,” as well as his role in shaping key national discussions on economic management, digital innovation, and public sector reform. His “calm disposition under pressure and respect for democratic institutions,” the family said, reflect “a maturity that the party requires as it rebuilds and repositions itself for the future.”

Embodying spirit

The family described Dr Bawumia as embodying “the inclusive spirit upon which the New Patriotic Party was founded,” noting that his politics promotes “national cohesion and opportunity rather than division.”

The Dombo family warned that the headline risks misleading the public and party faithful. “Responsible journalism demands accuracy, context, and verification, particularly when long-standing family names and political legacies are involved,” the statement said, adding that “in this instance, those standards were regrettably not met.”

The family therefore called on the newspaper to correct the misrepresentation and exercise greater editorial caution going forward. “Ghana’s democratic discourse must be anchored in truth, fairness, and fidelity to facts rather than assumption or conjecture,” it stated.

The statement reaffirmed the family’s commitment to national discourse grounded in principle. “Our voice will always be guided by conviction rather than convenience and by substance rather than spectacle,” the Dombo family further stated.
