Manchester City demonstrated their depth and resilience by defeating Newcastle United 3-1 at St James’ Park, advancing to the FA Cup quarterfinals despite a completely overhauled lineup. Meanwhile, Chelsea had to navigate a thrilling encounter against Wrexham, ultimately securing their place in the last eight with a 4-2 victory.
City manager Pep Guardiola opted to make a staggering ten changes to his squad following a midweek 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, with only Matheus Nunes retaining his starting position. Newcastle coach Eddie Howe made more modest adjustments, changing four players after a dramatic win against Manchester United.
The match began brightly for the home side, with Harvey Barnes giving Newcastle an early lead, finishing expertly after a well-placed pass from Sandro Tonali. However, City equalized in a bizarre fashion just before halftime when a dangerous cross from Jeremy Doku found its way to Brazilian star Savinho, who inadvertently let the ball bounce off his leg into the net.
City came back strong in the second half, taking the lead when Omar Marmoush scored from close range. The Egyptian made it 3-1 in the 65th minute, asserting City’s control over the match, as they reached the FA Cup quarterfinals for the ninth time in the last ten years.
The victory comes as City prepares for an important midweek clash against Real Madrid, as they continue to chase Premier League and Champions League success.
At the Racecourse Ground, Chelsea faced a robust challenge from Hollywood-owned Wrexham. The Welsh side, buoyed by celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, initially took the lead through Sam Smith. Chelsea equalized just before halftime with an own goal, setting the stage for a dramatic second half.
Wrexham regained the lead in the 78th minute thanks to Callum Doyle, but Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong responded just four minutes later, leveling the match again. The turning point came when Wrexham’s George Dobson was shown a red card in stoppage time.
Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Chelsea’s Alejandro Garnacho volleyed home to give the visitors the lead in extra time, followed by a late strike from Joao Pedro, securing a 4-2 win for the London giants.
“I think it was one of the hardest games of the season so far,” said Garnacho after the match. “We are proud to be in the next round. You have to fight, and the opposition played really well.”
Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson expressed pride in his team’s performance, noting that they showed they could compete against top-tier opposition and that they would now focus on their push for a fourth consecutive promotion, possibly to the Premier League.
In the earlier FA Cup action, Premier League leaders Arsenal continued their quest for a historic quadruple with a tense 2-1 victory over third-tier Mansfield.
Noni Madueke opened the scoring for Arsenal, but Mansfield’s Will Evans equalized shortly after halftime. Eberechi Eze eventually netted the winner midway through the second half, securing Arsenal’s advancement in a match praised for its competitive spirit and atmosphere.
