Ghana will need investments exceeding $500 billion to achieve a net-zero energy transition by 2070, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced.

The projection means that the country would be required to invest 11 billion dollars annually over the next 45 years.

The Ministry of Energy states that the ambitious plan will be supported by tax incentives for renewable energy projects and a comprehensive review of existing regulations to encourage greater private sector participation.

Speaking at the West Africa Green Economy Roundtable 2025, organised by the Pent Media Centre in partnership with African Consolidated Analytical Limited, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Solomon Adjetey, reaffirmed the government’s resolve to build a resilient energy transition framework.

“Net zero means that whatever emissions you generate must be reduced or eliminated through matching measures. Our programme targets 2070, but we are working to reach that goal even earlier. As outlined in our transition document, the estimated cost for Ghana to achieve net zero is over $500 billion,” Mr Adjetey said.

Chairman of the Prisons Service Council, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi Larbi, called on faith-based organisations to play a stronger role in advancing the transition agenda and addressing the scourge of illegal mining.

“Galamsey and illegal mining have been with us for a long time, but not at the scale we see today. The church has a key role to play by engaging communities and speaking to the conscience of people, especially those in churches and mosques,” he stated.

The Director of the Pent Media Centre, Ps. Dr Felix Dela Klutse stressed the importance of collaboration across all sectors of society to achieve meaningful results.

“It’s imperative that we bring together academia, industry leaders, the clergy, policymakers, and environmental advocates to design practical solutions. The African Green Economy Roundtable provides a platform to discuss how to make the green economy a reality,” he said.

The forum, which was held under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Development through Green Growth in West Africa”, brought together government officials, industry stakeholders, civil society, and the faith community to deliberate on pathways towards a cleaner, greener future.
