Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is gaining strong backing from both current and former executives of the New Patriotic Party across key regions as he campaigns for the party’s flagbearership.

The election, scheduled for January 31, 2026, will determine who leads the NPP into the 2028 general elections, and Dr. Bawumia’s tour is already generating enthusiasm among party faithful.

Across Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Greater Accra Regions, party leaders, former appointees, and constituency executives have openly thrown their support behind Dr. Bawumia. Many have praised his dedication to the party, noting his significant contributions to its growth and strengthening of its structures over the years.

From the grassroots to senior leadership, there appears to be a shared belief that he is the leader best positioned to unite the party and lead it successfully into the 2028 elections.

Ashanti Region

In the Ashanti Region, often regarded as NPP’s heartland, support for Dr. Bawumia was on full display during his extensive campaign tour from September 10 to 12, 2025.

Across the region, a mix of current and former party executives, former government appointees, and constituency leaders came together to express their backing for his bid to become the party’s flagbearer.

They spoke warmly of his constant engagement with the grassroots, his efforts to modernise party operations, and the innovative ideas he has brought to the NPP over the years. Many described him as the figure best suited to lead the party forward.

Party stalwarts praised Dr. Bawumia’s loyalty, strategic vision, and tireless commitment, stating that these qualities have strengthened the party’s base and expanded its appeal nationwide.

Executives noted his ability to bridge the gap between the party’s traditional support areas and new constituencies, pointing to his humility, intellect, and dedication to national development as traits that have earned him respect both within the NPP and among ordinary Ghanaians.

Delegates in the Ashanti Region have made it clear they are firmly behind Dr. Bawumia as the NPP prepares for its flagbearer election on January 31, 2026. During a three-day series of constituency visits, they included executives, Members of Parliament, elders, and youth groups who voiced their support without reservation.

The energy at these gatherings was unmistakable. Supporters could be heard chanting “No change,” “Bawumia, no challenger,” “Bawumia is the only one we know,” and “Chart no ato! Bawumia is the man.”

At meetings in Adansi Akrofuom, Bekwai, Konongo, Effiduase, Mampong, Offinso, Abuakwa, and Ahodwo, constituency executives praised Bawumia’s deep thinking, hard work, and humility, describing him as a visionary whose problem-solving approach is exactly what the NPP and the country need.

Several MPs and party elders went further to say that Dr. Bawumia remains the party’s strongest chance to reclaim power from the NDC in 2028. They pointed to Ghana’s electoral history, noting that candidates often succeed on a second attempt. They argued that changing the party’s 2024 candidate could weaken its chances of victory.

Eastern Region

In the Eastern Region, during his two-day campaign tour on September 24 and 25, 2025, Dr. Bawumia received an equally strong response, with regional and constituency executives praising him for being approachable and inclusive.

They said his visits were not just ceremonial, but a genuine effort to listen to concerns and bring people together. Many described him as someone who bridges the generation gap in the party and inspires young members to participate actively in shaping its future.

“We have never seen a leader so approachable. Dr. Bawumia doesn’t just visit for show. He listens. He engages with everyone, regardless of their position. When he comes here, you can feel that he genuinely cares about the people and the party,” one senior regional executive said.

“He asks questions, he hears our concerns, and he makes us feel included. It’s not about politics alone; it’s about building relationships, uniting the party, and making everyone feel their voice matters,” one constituency official also added.

Many also praised Dr. Bawumia for bridging the generational divide within the party. “He respects our experience as older members, but he also inspires the youth to step forward and contribute actively. He motivates them to participate in shaping the future of the party, and that’s something rare to see,” another executive said.

Executives further noted that his campaign style promotes dialogue and collaboration. “It’s not about giving speeches from a podium. He walks among us, talks to us, and listens to us. That kind of leadership strengthens the party more than anything else,” they said.

The executives further expressed optimism about the future, noting that “Dr. Bawumia shows that leadership can be both inclusive and forward-looking,” one executive indicated. They further expressed confidence that his inclusive approach would inspire commitment across generations and strengthen party unity as the NPP prepares to reclaim power from the NDC in 2028.

The show of support followed his engagements with party leaders in the region on September 29 and October 2, 2025, where he held extensive discussions with executives about the party’s future and his vision for national leadership.

The executives emphasised that their support is rooted in Dr. Bawumia’s demonstrated leadership qualities, including his accessibility, inclusiveness, and ability to unite party members across all levels. They noted that his interactions with the party reflect genuine concern for the perspectives and ideas of both senior and younger members, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and shared purpose.

They highlighted that Dr. Bawumia has consistently demonstrated the ability to inspire confidence and mobilise support, citing his tenure as Vice President and the tangible outcomes of the initiatives he led. They insisted that endorsing him as the flagbearer for 2028 will safeguard the party’s progress, prevent setbacks, and position the NPP for a triumphant return to power.

They emphasised that their endorsement reflects a deep conviction that Dr. Bawumia is the most capable leader to guide the party to victory in 2028 and to ensure that the ideals of the NPP continue to resonate with Ghanaians nationwide.

Greater Accra Region

That aside, former and current regional and constituency executives in the Greater Accra Region have expressed overwhelming support for Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was made during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the region, which took place from October 1 to October 5, 2025, during which he engaged directly with party leaders and stakeholders.

The executives emphasised that their support for Dr. Bawumia is grounded in his proven track record, political acumen, and ability to unify the party. They noted that he remains the most winnable candidate and is well-positioned to lead the NPP to victory in the next elections.

Adding further weight to the endorsements, the Member of Parliament for Trobu, Gloria Owusu, declared her firm support for Dr. Bawumia, describing him as the “people’s choice” to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.

She mentioned that he [Bawumia] continues to enjoy overwhelming backing from both party stakeholders and grassroots supporters across the region, including areas such as Amasaman, Trobu, Anyaa Sowutuom, and Dome Kwabenya.

Madam Owusu recounted a recent encounter at the Dome Market, where market women expressed their preference for Dr. Bawumia and urged party leaders to make the right decision in choosing a flagbearer.

She said that the women cautioned her that failing to present Dr. Bawumia as the party’s candidate in 2028 would have serious consequences for the NPP. They made it clear that they do not want a leader who insults or neglects the people.

The Trobu legislator also addressed claims that Dr. Bawumia bore responsibility for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections. She maintained that the loss stemmed from internal neglect and a lack of connection with supporters rather than from the party’s flagbearer. She emphasised that the party must focus on strengthening its ties with its grassroots base and maintaining cohesion to secure future victories.
