Don’t fund airlifting of Black Stars supports to 2026 World Cup – Vanderpuye to Gov’t

Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has stated that he does not support the government airlifting supporters to the USA, Canada, and Mexico to cheer on the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup.

He referenced the findings of the Dzamefe Commission, which advised against using public funds for such initiatives.

Vanderpuye made the comments in response to recent remarks by Sports Minister Kofi Adams on flying supporters to the tournament, insisting that any such exercise should be driven by corporate support through the fundraising committee established to mobilise resources.

In an interview with Citi Sports on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the former sports minister said: “The question will not be who will be taken to the venue? That will be one of the most difficult things to do as a minister.

“I would not want to be in his shoes,” highlighting the challenges of selecting supporters fairly.

He pointed out the potential for disputes among supporter groups and the risk of political interference, adding, “Every Ghanaian should be able to get the opportunity to support the Black Stars. I don’t think we should do politics with it.”

Vanderpuye also called on corporate organisations to commit resources to the initiative, noting that participating companies would gain significant benefits.

“Any organisation that commits itself will get very significant benefit,” he added, stressing that corporate involvement should drive the effort rather than public funding.
