The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the Mahama-led government to urgently complete unfinished sections and bypasses on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following Monday’s fatal crash at Birimso Bridge near Bunso Junction in the Eastern Region.
The accident, which claimed three lives and left several others injured, involved a State Transport Company (STC) bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up and a Kia Sorento. The collision has renewed concerns over safety on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and signed by Kennedy Nyarko Osei, ranking member, road and transport committee, the Minority extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable,” the statement said.
The Minority urged the government to prioritize the completion of outstanding works on the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway, including unfinished bypasses and other critical infrastructure, arguing that doing so would significantly improve road safety and help prevent future accidents.
While acknowledging that the proposed US$1.7 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project is a major long-term solution, the caucus insisted that immediate attention should be directed at completing the existing highway.
According to the Minority, although funds have reportedly been secured in an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana for the expressway project, an estimated US$300 million would be enough to complete the remaining works on the current highway.
“The immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now,” the statement stressed.
The caucus further called for accelerated construction on the existing road while preparations for the expressway continue, warning that delays could result in more avoidable deaths on the highway.
The full statement by the Minority reads as follows: “The Minority Caucus of Parliament has received with profound sorrow the news of the tragic road accident that occurred yesterday at Birimso bridge on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
“At least 15 people are feared dead following a devastating_ multi-vehicle collision on the Kumasi – Accra Highway. On behalf of the Minority Caucus, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
“We also sympathize with those who sustained injuries and wish them a speedy and full recovery. We share the grief of the affected families and stand in solidarity with all those impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.
“This unfortunate incident is yet another painful reminder of the urgent need to address the longstanding safety challenges on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable.
“The Minority Caucus therefore makes a strong national appeal to the Government to urgently prioritize the completion of all ongoing sections of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, including the existing bypasses and other outstanding works.
“We note that Government has committed US$1.7 billion for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project, with these funds set aside in an escrow account at the Bank of Ghana.
“However, approximately US$300 million would be sufficient to complete the existing bypasses and ongoing works on the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway.
“While the long-term Vision of constructing an expressway is commendable, the Minority Caucus believes that the immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now.
“As fatal crashes continue to occur on this critical corridor, expediting these outstanding works should be treated as a matter of national urgency while preparations for the expressway continue.”
