Illegal mining activities in the Suaman District of the Western North Region are causing severe destruction to major river bodies, prompting calls for swift government intervention.

A civil society group, the Forum for Accountability and Development, has raised alarm over what it describes as escalating environmental damage, particularly to Rivers Bia, Sui, and Fanoma.

According to the group, the activities of illegal miners are heavily polluting water sources and threatening the livelihoods of residents who depend on the rivers for domestic use and farming.

Speaking to the media, the group’s Convener, Addo Harry, called on government and regulatory bodies to take immediate and decisive action to curb the menace before it worsens.

He also expressed concern over reports that some farmers are being intimidated and threatened by illegal miners, further complicating efforts to protect the environment and local livelihoods.

Mr. Addo criticized what he described as inaction by some security agencies, urging the government to either prosecute offenders or consider reshuffling security leadership in the region to strengthen enforcement.

The group is particularly calling for intensified operations against illegal mining and stronger protection of water bodies, warning that continued neglect could have long-term consequences for both the environment and affected communities.
