All four presidential aspirants who contested the New Patriotic Party’s January 2026 primary have been appointed co-chairmen of the newly constituted NPP Policy Committees.
In what is being interpreted as a deliberate effort to unite the party and project internal cohesion, the NPP flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia strategically assigned key roles to his former contenders.
Dr Bawumia is seeking to establish a structured, data-driven policy framework within the party aimed at producing credible, evidence-based policy alternatives across critical sectors of Ghana’s economy and governance.
According to him, the initiative is intended to position the NPP not merely as an opposition party, but as a government-in-waiting with practical and workable solutions for Ghanaians.
At the apex of the new structure is the NPP Policy Committee, chaired by legislator and former Minister for Works and Housing and Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
Serving as Secretary to the Committee is Kwasi Nyame Baafi, whose appointment is expected to bring significant intellectual and administrative rigour to the body’s operations.
The committee will supervise a broad range of sector-specific sub-committees covering employment and jobs, energy, decentralisation and local governance, roads and transport, land and natural resources, education, health, the economy, and several other key policy areas.
Each committee has been tasked with conducting independent research, engaging sector experts and stakeholders, and producing policy alternatives backed by verifiable data for review and approval by the flagbearer.
According to the flagbearer’s office, Dr Bawumia is determined to move the NPP away from reactive opposition politics towards “proactive, solution-oriented governance preparation.”
“Dr. Bawumia wants a party that doesn’t just criticise, he wants a party that can present Ghanaians with a clear, costed, and credible alternative at any point in time,” the office indicated.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken businessman and former Member of Parliament, has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, a role that aligns with his long-standing advocacy for private sector-led job creation and entrepreneurship.
Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong has been named Co-Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, a sector that continues to face significant challenges in both urban and rural communities.
Former Agriculture and Interior Minister Bryan Acheampong will serve as Co-Chairman of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, a role seen as a natural fit given his experience in security and governance.
Completing the quartet is former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum, who has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Education Policy Committee, bringing with him what many consider an impressive record of policy innovation and a strong passion for transforming Ghana’s education sector.
