President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana and Chinese President Xi Jinping have held high-level bilateral talks in Beijing, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The discussions focused on advancing political and economic cooperation, with both leaders emphasizing shared development goals.

President Mahama is in Beijing to participate in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women. During his visit, he took the opportunity to engage with President Xi on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

China reaffirmed its commitment to a deepened partnership with Ghana, with President Xi stating that China is ready to support Ghana in “upgrading cooperation in various fields” and contributing to the building of an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.”

He emphasized the need to implement the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). He highlighted opportunities across key economic sectors, including mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and fisheries.

A key highlight of the meeting was China’s pledge to support Ghana in transforming its resource wealth into sustainable development. President Xi also signaled the prospect of zero-tariff access for Ghanaian goods.

This move could provide Ghanaian exporters with duty-free access to the vast Chinese market, strengthening trade and investment between the two nations.

President Mahama expressed his congratulations to China for successfully hosting the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, describing the event as “of great significance” and a testament to China’s leadership in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment globally.

On diplomatic matters, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the One-China policy and underscored Ghana’s dedication to multilateralism and global governance reforms.

He pledged support for initiatives to promote fairness and justice in international relations.

The discussions concluded with both leaders expressing confidence in a more dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship in the years ahead. Analysts note that Ghana-China relations have strengthened significantly over the years, with this latest engagement reinforcing the long-standing partnership and opening new opportunities for economic cooperation.

As Ghana continues to expand its international partnerships, the prospect of zero-tariff trade and collaborative initiatives in critical sectors is expected to bolster economic growth and development.

Both countries expressed optimism that the renewed commitment to bilateral ties will bring tangible benefits to citizens and businesses alike, reinforcing a shared vision of sustainable, inclusive progress.
