One person has been confirmed dead, and four others are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds after a violent clash during the Odwira Festival at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

According to police, 34 suspects have been arrested and are currently in custody at Aburi, assisting with ongoing investigations. Law enforcement officers have also retrieved a pump-action gun and a pistol from the scene.

Police reports indicate that the incident occurred when the Abokomahene of the Asona Family, Nana Semenhyia Asakrofa, performed traditional rites to lift the ban on drumming and noise-making — an act that officially marks the start of the Odwira Festival.

However, tensions reportedly flared between the Abokomahene and the Abimuhene of Ahwerease over who held the rightful authority to perform the ritual.

The dispute quickly escalated, leading to sporadic gunfire from some young men present at the ceremony. Four people sustained gunshot wounds, and one was later pronounced dead.

The Eastern Regional Police PRO, Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the tragic incident to Citi News, stating that the retrieved weapons will play a key role in the ongoing investigation.

Superintendent Tetteh assured the public that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to maintaining peace and security during and after this year’s Odwira Festival.

He further warned that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law, serving as a deterrent to others.
