New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama in the Ashanti Region, Francis Asenso Boakye, has made a strong case for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to be re-elected as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the December 2028 general elections, noting that Dr Bawumia is the NPP’s best bet amongst the five persons contesting the party’s presidential slot to win the presidency in 2028.

Addressing his constituents today, Monday, 26 January 2026, during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s stopover in the Bantama constituency, Asenso Boakye pointed out that it would be the biggest mistake the NPP would have ever made should the party decide not to repeat Dr Bawumia for the 2028 presidential elections, as it did in the past for President John Kufuor and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Among the five persons contesting in the upcoming Saturday, 31 January 2026, the one with humility, in-depth understanding, wisdom, intelligence, and understanding of the Ghanaian economy and the global system, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, clearly stands out,” Asenso Boakye remarked.

“The history of the NPP and NDC shows that both parties have consistently repeated their presidential candidate every time the candidate lost an election, and when they are repeated, they go ahead to win the next election. NPP repeated Kufuor in 2000, and he won. NPP repeated Nana Akufo-Addo in 2012 and 2016, and he won in 2016.

“The NDC repeated Atta-Mills in 2004 and 2008, and he went on to win in 2008. The NDC re-elected John Mahama in 2020 and 2024, and he won in 2024. The historical facts are the very reasons and grounds on which the NPP must repeat Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2028 election after bringing him for the first time in 2024,” Asenso Boakye further remarked.

In a related development, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo and a member of the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team, has also endorsed the former Vice President as the New Patriotic Party’s strongest option for the 2028 general election.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, January 26, Mr Jinapor said he holds all five presidential aspirants in high regard, noting that he has worked closely with most of them at various stages of his political career.

He explained that Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Dr Bryan Acheampong served with him in the same cabinet, while Kennedy Agyapong is a long-time friend. He also described former General Secretary Ing. Kwabena Agyepong as a respected figure within the party.

Despite his admiration for all the contenders, Mr Jinapor stressed that the NPP must be strategic if it intends to return to power in 2028. He acknowledged that winning the election would require hard work regardless of the candidate, but argued that Dr Bawumia stands out among the five.

According to him, Dr Bawumia’s long experience at the highest levels of governance gives him a clear advantage. He noted that the former Vice President has been on the presidential ticket since 2008 and has remained at the centre of national politics for nearly two decades.

Mr Jinapor also cited Dr Bawumia’s nationwide recognition as a major asset in a national election, describing him as a public servant of unquestionable integrity with no corruption allegations or scandals against his name.

He added that Dr Bawumia has consistently demonstrated competence, ideas, and solutions to national challenges, while showing the capacity to develop policies that respond to the needs of ordinary Ghanaians. Although he acknowledged the challenges faced by the previous NPP government, he said Dr Bawumia’s conduct in office reflects strong leadership qualities.

Highlighting humility, temperament, and vision as critical attributes in Ghanaian politics, Mr Jinapor said Dr Bawumia possesses the calmness and maturity required to lead the country and rally public support behind a clear national vision.

“I think he’s also shown to be formidable. He’s shown humility, and humility in Ghanaian politics is absolutely important. He’s shown to have the temperament to be president. And above all, I think he’s shown vision. He has a vision that, if he puts it before the Ghanaian people, we will have the chance to coalesce around it,” Jinapor said.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is one of five persons contesting to be the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. The other candidates are Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi; Dr Yaw Adu Twum, MP for Bosomtwe; Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central; and Kwabena Adjei Agyapong, former General Secretary of the NPP.

Over 211,000 delegates drawn from the 276 constituencies across the 16 Regions of the country are expected to vote in the Saturday, 31 January exercise. Delegates will vote at about 333 polling centres. Voting will commence at 7 am and end at 2 pm. The election process will be supervised by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, and the Ghana Police Service will be responsible for security.
