The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bekwai, Salifu Issaka, has confirmed that the popular entertainment pub known as ‘Friday Friends’ has suspended operations and will be permanently closed.
He made this revelation under oath before the Local Government and Rural Development Committee, citing a series of violent incidents that have heightened security concerns in the municipality.
These incidents include a shooting at Esiase linked to a land dispute, a brutal machete fight between two youth groups at Asokwa, and the fatal stabbing of a resident with scissors at Friday Friends.
According to Issaka, the closure forms part of a resolution by the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to curb violence and prevent future disturbances.
He stressed that the move is necessary to ensure the safety of residents and restore public confidence in the municipality’s security framework.
The MCE further disclosed that MUSEC has directed the police to intensify night patrols, clamp down on drug-related activities, and strengthen community surveillance.
These actions, he said, reflect the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining law and order while promoting a peaceful environment for development.
Issaka reported that the Assembly’s share of the Common Fund currently exceeds GHS 6 million, with internally generated funds projected to reach GHS 2.3 million for the year under review.
He appealed to the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Parliamentary Committee to consider increasing the municipality’s share of the Common Fund to support key developmental initiatives.
The decision to close Friday Friends signals a firm stance by the Bekwai Municipal Assembly to prioritize safety over convenience.
Residents hope this action marks the beginning of a more secure and orderly environment across the municipality.
