The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested eight foreigners for engaging in illegal gold mining and trading at Wewe, a community near Banda in the Bono Region of Ghana.

According to a police statement issued on Friday, October 3, 2025, the suspects were apprehended following weeks of surveillance and intelligence operations targeting unlicensed gold exploration activities in the area.

The individuals, identified as Sayuba Ziba, Kienu Dobou, Osman Tunabu, Nana Alhassan, Wadrago Abdulai, Aliu Sali, Ibrahim Wulba, and Alhassan Imoro, are nationals of Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, and Gambia.

They were arrested on Thursday, October 2, 2025, while allegedly conducting illegal mining and gold trading operations without authorization.

During the operation, police seized several items, including GH¢23,450 in cash, raw gold, gold dust, mercury, and a lighter believed to have been used in processing gold. The exhibits have been secured for forensic analysis.

Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, confirmed that all eight suspects are in police custody and assisting with investigations.

He added that arrangements are underway to prosecute the suspects in court.

Akeelah emphasised that the Bono Regional Police Command remains committed to clamping down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and other unauthorised mining activities in the region to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
