Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has said he has the proven track record and innovative ideas needed to transform Ghana’s economy, declaring that if elected President, he will make living conditions in the country comparable to those abroad — a vision he described as bringing “Abrokyire” to Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia made this known when he addressed party supporters and outlined what he considers key achievements under his tenure as Vice President, especially in the area of digital transformation in Ghana, Citi News reported.

Innovative Ideas

He emphasised that before the current administration, the Ghana Card system was not operational. According to him, he was assigned oversight responsibility and worked closely with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to ensure the successful nationwide rollout of the digital ID.

“We issued the Ghana Card, and today Ghana is one of the few countries in the world with this type of digital national ID,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also highlighted major reforms in the mobile money and fintech ecosystem. He recalled that mobile money transfers were once restricted to single networks and could not be linked to bank accounts. “I said we could do it in Ghana, and we have done it,” he stated.

He noted that the introduction of mobile money interoperability has transformed MoMo accounts into powerful digital financial tools, enabling Ghanaians to renew health insurance, pay utility bills, and even receive international transfers directly into their mobile wallets.

He stressed that Ghana remains the only country in Africa with such a seamless digital financial platform.

Evidence of Growth

According to him, the growth of mobile money services has sparked significant job creation.

“When we came, the MoMo agents were 107,000. Now they are 900,000. We have created 800,000 jobs for MoMo agents.”

Dr. Bawumia urged Ghanaians to assess him based on the tangible results he has delivered as Vice President, arguing that transformational leadership is driven by innovative ideas—not money.

“You have seen what I can do as Vice President without the power. If you make me president with the power, I will bring ‘Abrokyire’ to Ghana here,” he declared.

In a related development, Samuel Pyne, former Mayor of Kumasi and an aspirant for the National Vice-Chairperson position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most appealing and easily marketable flagbearer candidate for the party.

Speaking at a political programme on Wontumi TV, Pyne said Bawumia’s character, visibility, and experience as former Vice President would make it easier for Ghanaians to vote for him in the 2028 presidential election if he is selected as the NPP’s flagbearer on January 31, 2026.

“Dr. Bawumia became the most visible Vice President in Ghana’s history. By virtue of his temperament and ideas, he won the hearts of the populace, and so marketing him again to the Ghanaian electorate would be significantly easier than marketing the other four contesting party members,” Pyne said.

Track Record

Highlighting Bawumia’s track record, Pyne emphasized the former Vice President’s ability to implement transformative policies such as Ghana’s mobile money interoperability and the digitalization agenda.

“In the recent past, we witnessed many of our female citizens and other traders being robbed while travelling for business across the country because they carried physical cash.

“However, the narrative has changed since the introduction of mobile money interoperability, which allows funds to be loaded onto a phone and used for business wherever one is located or resident,” he said.

Pyne also cited initiatives such as the electronic gate system at Kotoka International Airport and the drone health delivery system as examples of Bawumia’s capacity to conceive and execute impactful national projects.

 Vice Chair Slot

Regarding his own political ambitions, Pyne stated that he aims to provide intellectual support to both the NPP Chairman and the flagbearer, contributing his experience to strengthen the party’s governance and grassroots structures.

“I am contesting to become a Vice Chairperson of the NPP so I can contribute my ideas, vision, and experiences to enhance the NPP’s governance style and achieve stronger organizational control,” he added.
