Residents in the Tema Metropolis and Eastern parts of Accra are to experience a water supply interruption following a burst on a 42-inch Transmission Line that disrupts the Water Supply to Eastern Accra
and Tema Metropolis.
In a release by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the company notified the public, particularly residents and businesses in Tema and the eastern part of Accra, that a major burst occurred on the 42-inch transmission pipeline on Monday, 19 January 2026, and the same has resulted in a significant interruption to water supply across several communities within the affected corridor.
The interruption
“Our engineers and technical teams mobilized immediately upon detection of the fault and have since been working around the clock to repair the damaged line.
“Due to the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repair, the restoration process requires careful handling to ensure safety, durability, and efficiency,” the GWL statement read.
“GWL assures the public that every effort is being made to complete the repair work as quickly as possible and restore the normal water supply. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our cherished customers,” the statement further read.
The interruption, according to GWL, “will affect customers in the entire Tema Metropolis and most parts of Accra, including but not limited to Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, Parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and surrounding communities.”

The GWL also stated that “essential service providers, especially schools and hospitals,” will be assisted to ensure they have access to clean water during the repair of the destroyed transmission pipeline.
“GWL assures all affected customers that the water supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the repair work.
“The company sincerely regrets the inconvenience this interruption may cause and appreciates the patience and understanding of our valued customers,” the GWL release read in conclusion.
GWL
Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) is the sole government-owned water utility company. It is responsible for the production, transmission, and distribution of water in urban areas in Ghana.
As of June 2024, the company manages and operates eighty-four (84) water systems comprising sixty-one (61) surface water systems and twenty-three (23) ground water systems. These systems serve about 14 million people nationwide. The company operates in 15 regional offices with 103 district offices.
Additionally, GWL’s average production is 950,995 m3/day (209 million gallons/day), while demand is 1,129,361 m3/day (248 million gallons/day). Our urban access is 84.2%, which serves 1,008,301 customers, of which 89% are metered. The total staff strength is 5,755.
Governance Structure
The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is responsible for formulating water supply policy, overseeing GWL operations, sourcing funding from external support agencies, and coordinating sector investment plans.
Under the general direction of the Ministry, GWL is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors, which has overall responsibility for setting sector policies and controlling corporate programmes. The day-to-day affairs of the company are managed by a Managing Director and three General Managers, one in charge of Finance and Administration, another in charge of Operations, and the other in charge of Special Duties (Arrears Reduction).
The four leaders are assisted by 16 Chief Managers who head various departments at the Head Office. These departments are as follows: Project Planning and Development, Human Resources and Administrative Services, Legal Services, Public Relations, Corporate Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Technology and Innovation, Finance, Materials, Commercial and Marketing, Audit, Water Quality Assurance/Water Resources, Special Duties, Low Income Consumer Support Department (LICSD), Operations and Maintenance, G-Water Bottling Plant, Lands and Estates.
The 15 Regional Chief Managers are supported by Unit Heads (Line Managers). At the district level, District Managers supervise and control GWL’s operations across the country.
