The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally designated the Ghana Police Service as the sole security agency responsible for safeguarding its presidential primary, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Through its Presidential Elections Committee, the party made it clear that the deployment of any non-uniformed, plain-clothed, or otherwise unauthorised personnel from National Security or any other body at voting centres, collation points, or any primary-related activity will not be tolerated.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 29, and signed by the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, they cautioned that any attempt by unauthorised operatives to interfere with the primary would be considered a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into the party’s internal democratic process, with the potential to disrupt or manipulate the election.
“The NPP will not hesitate to invoke all lawful remedies available to it to protect the integrity of this process. Any unauthorised presence will be challenged and resisted within the bounds of the law,” the statement added.
The Party further stressed that the Ghana Police Service has demonstrated sufficient capacity and professionalism to handle the exercise. Below is the full statement as released by the NPP.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP), through the Presidential Elections Committee, has formally designated the Ghana Police Service as the only security institution responsible for providing security for the Party’s Presidential Primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
“Accordingly, the Party states unequivocally that it will not tolerate the presence, deployment, or activities of any non-uniformed, plain-clothed, or otherwise unauthorised security personnel deployed by National Security or any other institution at any voting centre, collation point, or any activity connected to the conduct of the primary.
“We have information that some elements within the National Security have plans to deploy unauthorised operatives. Any attempt by National Security or any other unauthorised body to deploy operatives to the election will be treated as a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into the internal democratic processes of the Party, with the clear potential to disrupt or manipulate the election.
“The NPP will not hesitate to invoke all lawful remedies available to it to protect the integrity of this process. Any unauthorised presence will be challenged and resisted within the bounds of the law.
“The Ghana Police Service has so far shown enough capacity and professionalism. We, therefore, expect the Ghana Police Service to enforce this directive strictly and without compromise. The Police must ensure that only duly authorized, identifiable police officers are deployed throughout the exercise in accordance with assurances given.
Meanwhile, the Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery along the Tamale–Buipe road last year, in which a member of the Council of State was among the victims.
The suspects—Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila, and Haruna Safianu—were arrested on January 11, 2026, following investigations into the July 21, 2025, incident.
Briefing the media at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the Council of State member was attacked by six armed men while travelling on the Tamale–Buipe highway.
She explained that the assailants made away with several personal belongings, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop, and other items. COP Donkor noted that investigations into the case are still ongoing.
In a separate intelligence-led operation, the CID Director-General disclosed that five suspects linked to another robbery attack at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region were also arrested on January 16, 2026.
According to her, the suspects—Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe alias Salifu, Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman, and Bukari Sule alias Taylor—together with other accomplices, allegedly blocked the Goaso–Tepa Road on December 2, 2025, while armed, and carried out a robbery attack.
COP Donkor urged the public to remain vigilant, prioritise personal safety, and avoid sharing sensitive information with strangers, as police continue efforts to curb highway robberies across the country.
