The Kantanka family is urging the police to prosecute Akofena for attempted murder, insisting the available evidence warrants immediate legal action

The family of the late Apostle Emeritus Professor Ing. Kwadwo Safo has called on law enforcement authorities to immediately re-arrest Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, and pursue attempted murder charges against him in connection with the shooting of former Gender Minister, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the family expressed deep dissatisfaction with the handling of the case, describing the charges brought before the court as inadequate despite what they claim to be compelling evidence linking Akofena to the attack.

The Adenta Circuit Court had on Monday, June 22, 2026, granted Akofena and eight others bail set at GH¢500,000 each with two sureties, a decision that has intensified outrage among family members.

According to the family’s spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Boakye, the court cannot be faulted, as it made its ruling based solely on the charges presented by prosecutors.

However, he stressed that the prosecution’s failure to include attempted murder charges significantly influenced the outcome of the court hearing.

“We are not blaming the court because the court acted on what the prosecution brought before it. So, you will realize that none of the arrested guys who were wearing military uniforms was charged with attempted murder.

So, we are urging all those involved in handling the matter to be proactive and ensure that Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo gets justice”, he noted.

The family has urged authorities handling the case to act decisively to ensure justice for Hon. Adwoa Safo. Lawyers representing the family are reportedly preparing petitions to the Attorney-General, the Chief Justice, and the Inspector-General of Police to review the case and escalate the charges.

According to the family, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo continues to live with the devastating consequences of the shooting and has never fully recovered from the traumatic ordeal.

Her relatives say, the former deputy Majority Leader undergoes a demanding and ongoing medical regime that includes MRI scans, CT scans, X-rays, specialist neurological assessments, and other diagnostic procedures aimed at monitoring and treating pellets and injuries sustained during the gunshot attacks.

They contend that while she continues to battle the physical and psychological effects of the shooting, Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena was seen in a widely circulated video dancing and celebrating after being granted bail—a development the family describes as deeply disturbing and insensitive given the gravity of the incident and its lasting impact on the victim.

Beyond the legal battle, the incident has exposed growing tensions within the Kantanka family following the passing of their patriarch.

Kwadwo Safo Jnr., the youngest son of the late Apostle, lamented that internal conflicts and public controversies are damaging the once-respected image of the family.

“Our late father left a very good legacy for us as children to benefit from it. Before, we go out with our chest high and when you tell people that you are a child or relative of Apostle Kwadwo Safo, everybody would want to associate with you.

However, today, the moment you introduce yourself as a child or relative of Apostle Kwadwo Safo, people would want to dissociate themselves from you for fear that you have a weapon on you.

I know that wherever our father is, he is very disappointed in us”, he noted.

He noted that where association with the Safo name once brought pride, it is now met with suspicion, as people fear links to violence and instability.

“If we continue to create chaos or fight among ourselves, we are denting the image of our father. Because, in future, when we want to continue the business our father left behind and calls for investors, no one will respond. So, whatever is happening now has its own repercussions. We thank God for the life Hon. Adwoa Safo”, he stressed.

According to the family, the shooting incident occurred during an attempt to resolve internal disputes. Hon. Adwoa Safo had reportedly invited her siblings to unite and pursue peace ahead of their father’s burial, with plans to maintain harmony until leadership matters within the family and church are formally settled.

Public figure Richard “Osebo” Brown also weighed in, urging the leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission to uphold the values of unity and righteousness, while calling for justice to prevail.
