The second batch of beneficiaries under the Weija Gbawe MP’s surgery initiative, implemented through a partnership among the Columbia Union Conference (USA), GAHS, and the medical team at SDA Valley View Hospital, has successfully undergone surgery and is currently recovering.
The programme forms part of efforts by Jerry Ahmed Shiab to improve access to quality eye care services and restore sight to individuals suffering from various vision-related conditions within the constituency.
Organisers of the initiative said the successful surgeries represent another significant milestone in the healthcare intervention, which aims to transform lives by providing critical medical support to residents who may otherwise be unable to afford such procedures.
According to the organisers, the project is not only restoring vision but also creating renewed opportunities for beneficiaries to improve their quality of life, regain independence, and contribute more actively to their families and communities.
In a remark, Mr Shiab noted that the partnership continues to demonstrate the importance of collaboration in expanding access to specialised healthcare services and addressing preventable vision impairment.
He further expressed optimism that the initiative would continue to bring hope and brighter futures to many more individuals and families as additional beneficiaries receive treatment in subsequent phases of the programme.
The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly (WGMA) is one of the Two Hundred and Sixty-One (261) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and one of the Twenty-Nine (29) MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region.
The Municipality was carved out of the former Ga West Municipal Assembly in November 2007. The Assembly was initially established under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1867 with its capital at Weija.
The Instrument was repealed on 15th March, 2013 and replaced with L.I. 2134. It was subsequently repealed and replaced with L.I. 2315, which currently establishes the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly.
According to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly had a population of 180,916, with approximately 48 percent males and 52 percent females.
Results from the 2021 Population and Housing Census show that the population increased to 213,674, comprising 104,910 males and 108,764 females, indicating steady growth over the intercensal period.
The Municipality lies within the western peri-urban corridor of the Greater Accra Region and is influenced by Accra’s rapid spatial expansion. Its strategic location leads to significant daily population movements for employment, commerce, education, and other socio-economic activities within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
